Researchers tracking wild polar bears in northern Canada witnessed something remarkably uncommon this autumn: a female bear taking in a cub that was not biologically her own.
The five-year-old maternal bear and her 10- to 11-month-old cubs were spotted and captured on camera during the annual polar bear migration along the Hudson Bay's western shore near Churchill, Manitoba, an locale renowned for its concentration of Arctic bears.
"This is uncommon," stated a researcher with a polar bear conservation group. "The reasons are unclear why it occurs...but we know it doesn't happen often at all."
It's only the thirteenth documented instance of fostering out of 4,600 bears researched for almost fifty years in that region.
The mother bear was initially tagged as she emerged from her birthing den this springtime. Initially, she had one cub, which scientists marked for research.
In the autumn, she was seen again, but this time with two cubs - the original cub and another that was untagged. Researchers are uncertain what happened to the new cub's birth mother, but they are attempting to locate her using genetic samples.
"The bears need every advantage they can get these days with a warming climate," noted a polar bear scientist. "When mother bears have the chance to take in an additional youngster and raise it and successfully wean it, it's a good thing for the population."
Polar bears in the wild only have a 50% chance of living into maturity, but having a mother caring for them boosts their chances.
The cubs appear to be healthy, according to experts, and they will likely remain with their mother until they are about two-and-a-half years old.
Following this, the family is anticipated to venture out to the frozen ocean, where the youngsters will be taught from their mother bear how to catch prey and survive on their own.
"It is heartening to know that the bears are caring for each other," added the researcher.
