Czech 'Trumpist' PM-Elect Refuses to Sell Business Empire Amid Ethical Row

Andrej Babiš, the self-proclaimed billionaire who secured victory in the recent Czech election, has declined to offload his vast business interests, while asserting he will address a ethical dilemma that might block him from assuming the position of prime minister.

Stance on Business Holdings

Babiš, whose ANO party emerged victorious in the October vote but lacked a majority in parliament, stated in a online statement that he will not divest his Agrofert group, which operates in agriculture, food processing, and chemical industries.

“I have consistently stated I will never sell Agrofert. I have consistently stated I will address the conflict of interest in compliance with national and EU regulations,” the billionaire remarked. “This is not like selling a roll in a bakeshop.”

President's Demand

The Czech president, Petr Pavel, stated that the 71-year-old political figure must publicly explain how he will eliminate ethical conflicts arising from his business activities before being appointed premier.

The national charter “explicitly requires the head of state to take into account the possible emergence of a conflict of interest and the possibilities for its resolution” when selecting government ministers, the presidential administration noted.

The president “wants it to be clear in what precise manner Andrej Babiš will meet his statutory duties”, the announcement added, stating that Pavel was prepared to appoint Babiš as prime minister “without delay” once the issue was resolved.

Corporate Activities and Regulatory Concerns

Babiš's several hundred firms, primarily under the Agrofert group, function in the nation and other central European states, benefiting from millions of euros in domestic and European farming and other grants, as well as public contracts.

Under national legislation, government ministers cannot receiving state support or agreements. The anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International has stated that to avoid a ethical breach, Babiš must either sell, refuse public contracts, or not enter public office.

Previous Tenure and Current Intentions

Babiš said he would “abide by the regulations” if appointed as prime minister, but declined to explain how in beforehand because the issue was “an highly personal and personal matter for me, and journalists will always criticise me regardless”.

During his first term as premier, from 2017 to 2021, Babiš faced several court cases and an European inquiry over potential conflicts of interest. He placed his assets into trust funds, while retaining certain control over them.

A court and the EU executive both determined that this was insufficient. Babiš stated recently that he was once more the exclusive proprietor of Agrofert and insisted he was “implementing measures” to avoid a ethical problem, but refused to reveal details.

Coalition Agreement and International Implications

The billionaire populist has concluded a governing pact with two rightwing fringe parties, the ultra-conservative, Russia-friendly SPD, which has advocated a public vote on exiting the EU, and the Motorists for Themselves, which has mainly campaigned against the EU’s environmental policy.

The new government, if confirmed, is likely to strengthen the populist bloc in the region and could challenge western support for Ukraine – even though Babiš has contacted Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to confirm of Czech support.

Pavel, who as president has a role for foreign policy, also demanded that the government agenda include a declaration on the government’s position on the conflict in Ukraine, including a pledge to fulfilling Nato obligations.

The head of state has earlier said he would not approve any cabinet candidates who might doubt the Czech Republic’s EU and Nato commitments, a requirement that the ultra-conservative party has indicated it will satisfy by proposing independent technocrats.
