Flight Disruptions in the US Set to Intensify, Transport Secretary Warns

US air traffic controllers are increasingly seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid during the federal closure, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," the official told Fox News on Sunday, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

After the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But a number have been missing, leading airports to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has added to delays caused by climate and other issues.

Over three thousand American flights were postponed on Sunday, and the secretary said he expects the circumstances to grow worse.

"I am seeing the pressure," Duffy said in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I drive Uber, can I secure an alternative of earnings to make ends meet?'" he added.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields said flights would be held up due to a shortage of employees - among the peak after the closure started.

The US government shutdown reached its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second most extended halt in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the number of planes in the sky if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his interview, he would not answer directly when questioned if it was safe to fly in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to controllers.

"I require my controllers focused on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at home," the official said.

On that day, certain flights were stopped at LAX due to staffing shortages, causing disruption at the fifth most active terminal in the country and one of the busiest in the world, as well as other flights extending upward to the city of Oakland.

The FAA notice went out at 8:45 AM in the morning on Sunday. Numerous trips were back on schedule before noon.

Travel at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were postponed an average of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the authority said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second-busiest airport in the US, could experience problems from reduced staff in the afternoon.

The agency advised passengers in California to check with airlines about updated flight schedules.

The issue comes ahead of the third match of the World Series, which is scheduled in Los Angeles on Monday night, and approximately four weeks before the Thanksgiving break, among the peak times to fly in the US.

Strain on American aviation helped end a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the shutdown had reached its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including pilot training.

It led a number of air traffic controllers to remain absent on the identical date on 25 January 2019, briefly halting movement at New York's LaGuardia airport.

On that date, the former president, who at the time was in his initial presidency as leader, agreed to sign a temporary funding measure, bringing an end to the government shutdown after 35 days.
