Rybakina Stuns Sabalenka to Win Record £4 Million Prize
Rybakina secured her 45th hard court win of the year
Elena Rybakina secured the greatest prize in WTA history by defeating world number one Aryna Sabalenka in two sets at the championship.
The 26-year-old produced a stunning display to overcome four-times Grand Slam champion Sabalenka 6-3 7-6 (7-0) in Saudi Arabia.
Because both players came through the event without a loss, the purse on the table was a unprecedented almost £4 million – the biggest payout offering in women's tennis the sport's history.
The reward tops the £3.74m the Belarusian won for winning the New York major, which was the highest-paying major tournament in the current year.

The champion, who was the sixth-ranked player, hit sixteen winning shots during a commanding opening set performance.
Rybakina saved two chances before winning every point in the sixth game to go a break up and held her serve to secure the first set.
As the second set progressed, the world number one defended two break points at 4-4 to swing the momentum in her favor.
But, after fighting back to disrupt her opponent's flow, the top seed failed to capitalize by wasting two chances in the following game to tie the second set at 5-5.
Her inability to force a decider affected her tiebreak play, with Rybakina taking every point to win the championship.
This win, her sixth triumph over Sabalenka, means she will move up one spot in the WTA rankings to number five in the world.
A distraught the runner-up appeared to be in tears as she met with her coaching team shortly after the match.
"That was not the finest display from me today but Elena you were definitely the superior competitor," Sabalenka addressed the audience.
"You really smashed me out of the court. I'm happy to see you play your best tennis. Celebrate this stunning trophy."
