The direst possible consequences of the global heating for the UK have been mapped by researchers, encompassing a searing 4C jump in mean temperatures to a two-metre rise in sea levels. An alternative projection foresees a plunge of 6C in temperature following the collapse of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt agriculture and energy demand.

Possible Events, Not Guarantees

These consequences, a number of which are associated with climate tipping points, are viewed as improbable but plausible. The scientists explained that these models filled a gap in risk assessment that had left the UK not ready for extreme outcomes.

"The climate extremes we have mapped aren’t predictions, but they are plausible," commented the professor who led the analysis. "The UK has been formulating policy in the absence of the frameworks to assess worst-case scenarios. We've now given decision-makers what they need to plan for future conditions they wish to avoid, but can’t afford to ignore."

A Range of Harsh Climate Projections

A further series of severe models sets out the possible scale of severe conditions between now and the close of the 2100s. These suggest that thermometer readings could rocket in certain periods by up to 6C above average, while precipitation could be triple typical amounts.

The chance of the worst-case outcomes happening cannot be precisely determined due to unknown factors about what measures will be enacted to address climate change and how the Earth's systems will behave. This analysis was likened to national security risk assessments or scenario planning for economic stability.

Critical Scenario Highlights

  • Severe Heating: Worldwide averages soaring past 4C by 2100 could transpire if international cooperation fails or if vicious cycles such as the Amazon rainforest dying release its vast reserves of carbon. This would cause severe and lengthy heatwaves and dry spells hitting the UK in summer.
  • Ocean Circulation Failure: A critical sea current, the North Atlantic current, is weakening and showing signs of collapse due to ocean warming. A full shutdown beginning in 2030 would lead to a drastic cooling in the UK. "Agriculture would face immense difficulties and freshwater availability would be completely altered," explained Arnell.
  • Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could happen if polar ice in Greenland and Antarctica disintegrate quickly, submerging low-lying areas. In contrast to the other scenarios, this possibility is already recognized by planners.
  • Pollution Paradox: Global averages could also be increased by about 0.75C if industrial aerosols is sharply cut. This counterintuitive effect occurs because tiny specks from industrial activity scatter solar radiation from warming the ground.

Planning for the Extreme

These dire projections could be used to inform the building of major projects, including new towns, energy plants and water management networks. Awareness of these environmental threats could also speed the push to reduce carbon pollution.

The research developed the worst-case scenarios using a mix of past data and records, climate models and climate physics. The possibilities do not take into account broader worldwide issues including the devastation of food supplies and increased conflict.

This work was requested as part of a national risk assessment framework. Independent analyses have warned that insufficient focus was being given to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.

An independent advisory body has recommended that the UK needs to "prepare for two degrees of warming" and evaluate the risks for four degrees. Past policy documents have been described as being "very weak" by certain experts.

A national response noted: "Climate change is at the core of our national priorities, both preparing for impacts and becoming a low-carbon economy. It is crucial that the UK is prepared for the effects."
