Already considered Magic: The Gathering's most social way to play, Commander is getting a holiday update perfect for the holidays. In a recent show, creators Josh Lee Kwai and Jimmy Wong played a four-player game dubbed "Holiday Countdown."

How the Festive Format Function

Fundamentally is a simple layer added on top of a standard Commander game. One special marker travels to each player. Once it arrives at the active player's turn, the game briefly pauses. Every player makes a hidden choice if they will be being Nice or Naughty via indicator cards.

Although the video had a lot of production value, this is a concept that any group can adapt at home. Participants uses their standard Commander deck, and the only extra items required are several MTG packs from different sets.

A possible drawback could be that if players know ahead of time the prize for being Nice, then everyone try to get the best booster pack. One might change this in different ways, such as drafting cards from a shared pool or enabling gamers to include specific cards from outside the game.

Based on the entertaining match, this holiday variant is definitely a festive format to spread some joy this holiday season. It adds a layer to the social interplay between players in a fun and way, making it a memorable experience for Magic fans everywhere.
