No fewer than 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.
The deceased are yet to be formally identified, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as âlively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting othersâ.
âHow is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?â a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. âHe shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,â she recalled.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
âThis despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,â the statement continued.
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Childrenâs Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli government.
From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with five in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the incident as an âutter carnage,â but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a âmiracleâ he survived.
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he heard âa large numberâ of gunshots.
âI thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,â he said. âI sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. Iâm ok.â
