The Hornets Dismiss Paulo Pezzolano Following 10 Games and Reappoint Javi Gracia as Manager
Watford Football Club have taken the decision to end their manager's contract after only five months and 10 games in charge, announcing the return of ex-manager Javi Gracia as his replacement.
Reports suggest that Pezzolano, appointed in the spring to replace the interim manager, along with his technical staff, were instructed not to take training on midweek as speculation about his exit mounted on the previous day.
The 40-year-old was summoned for a meeting where he became the 11th manager the club have let go since the beginning of 2020.
"We are delighted to welcome back Javi," stated Watford's chairman and CEO. "His passion, leadership and well-defined plan will foster stability, unity and positive energy.
"We believe many fans who wished Gracia had never departed in 2019. With this talented squad, we are certain his experience and qualities are exactly what we need at this moment."
The returning manager previously led the team to the FA Cup final for the second time in their history in 2019, but was sacked a few matches into the next season and most recently coached at Leeds United in 2023.
"Personally, the emotion I have right now is that I'm going back to a familiar place. It was the happiest time of my professional life," Gracia remarked. "There are very good memories and we have unfinished business here. For us, it's another important step in our journey.
"It is something special for us, and at the same time we are very ambitious for this campaign. If we are together, we are stronger."
The decision to remove Pezzolano comes even after their win against Oxford United at their home ground on Saturday, which lifted them to 11th in the second tier after a slow start that yielded five points from the first six games.
The Uruguayan is said to have departed dismayed by the call to sack him, having led Watford to a three-match unbeaten run that featured a victory at home over Hull City and a draw at Fratton Park, placing them three points off the promotion playoffs.
Pezzolano arrived shortly after the conclusion of last season with a proven track record of guiding clubs to promotion in La Liga, Brazil and his home country.
