Ultra-Conservative Ex- Lawmaker J.A. Kast Elected as Chile's New President.

In a decisive runoff election, far-right politician José Antonio Kast has won the presidential office in Chile.

A Commanding Triumph

With more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, overcoming leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having earlier been defeated by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.

Agenda Built On Security and Migration

Noted for his strong Catholic views and admiration for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was largely centered on promises to address growing insecurity and radically curb immigration.

He consistently blamed immigrants, especially the roughly 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the election cycle, he delivered an ultimatum for them to leave before the inauguration or face deportation.

His policy ideas featured controversial measures such as constructing holding facilities, barriers, perimeter fencing, and bolstering the military presence on the northern border.

Part of a Regional Shift

Numerous analysts interpret Kast's success as fitting into a wider right-wing trend in the region, coming after recent electoral results in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Nevertheless, other analysts also describe it as a continuation of the regular rotation of power between left-wing and right governments since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.

Governing Without a Solid Majority

In spite of his clear electoral victory, Kast will not have an overall majority in the legislature, not in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even when all conservative parties are counted together.

This political situation could hinder his plans, such as a promise to reduce public spending by a significant sum within 18 months—a plan for which he has yet to offered concrete steps.

"We have many questions about how a Kast administration will operate that remain unclear because he has not said the way he will implement them," noted a political professor.

The professor stated, "Regarding fiscal matters, it is very likely we will see spending cuts typical of the right-wing. However the area with far less ambiguity is on public safety, because that has been his flagship issue during the campaign."
