Venus Williams, 45, Awarded Wild Card for Her Initial Australian Open in Five Years.
A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, commencing on January 18 in Melbourne.
A Landmark Comeback to the Australian Courts
Tournament officials announced on Friday that the forty-five-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.
Gearing Up for the Australian Summer
The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, a fortnight prior to the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.
Her last appearance in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.
"I’m excited to return in the country and eagerly anticipating competing during the Australian summer," Williams stated. "I have experienced so many incredible moments there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to return to a place that has meant so much to my professional journey."
Statistical Highlights
Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 defeats. This year will represent the twenty-second occasion she has appeared in the main draw.
Establishing a Fresh Benchmark
Officials pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Australian Open main draw, eclipsing the mark previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the first round at the venue in 2015.

In late December, Williams married Danish-born model and actor Andrea Preti in Florida's Palm Beach.
